Most couples interview photographers hard and hire a host almost on instinct, which is backwards. The questions to ask a wedding MC are the difference between a reception that flows and one that stalls between courses while two hundred guests check their phones. Your emcee is the only vendor holding the whole evening together in real time, so the interview should be as deliberate as the one you gave your planner.

Experience and Fit
- How many weddings have you hosted, and how many in the past twelve months?
- Have you worked at my venue before, and what should I know about its room and audio?
- How would you describe your hosting style, and how do you adapt it to a quieter room?
- Can I watch unedited footage of you hosting, not just a highlight reel?
That last one matters most. A ninety second promo cut proves someone can be edited well. A five minute unbroken clip of a real reception shows pacing, pronunciation, how they recover from a missed cue, and whether guests are actually engaged or politely waiting. Preparation and Planning
This section separates professionals from people who are good on a microphone. Great hosting is mostly work that happens before the day.
- What does your planning process look like between booking and the wedding?
- How many calls are included, and do you build a written run of show?

- Do you attend the rehearsal, and is that included or an added fee?
- Who do you coordinate with directly on the day, and how?

- What time do you arrive, and what do you do before guests are seated?
- How do you handle a speech that runs long, or a speaker who does not appear?
- How do you work with our DJ or band so announcements and music do not collide?
- What do you do during dinner service and quieter stretches of the evening?
Ask the speech question of every candidate. The answers vary enormously, and the good ones are specific: a signal agreed with the couple beforehand, a graceful verbal handoff, a plan for who intervenes. Vague reassurance is a warning sign. Someone who asks about guest count, room layout, family dynamics, which moments matter most and what you are worried about is already thinking about your event. Someone who only asks the date and quotes a number is selling availability, not hosting.
